International flights normally arrive in the capital city, Lilongwe. Flights arrive from Europe (mainly London, England) as well as other neighboring southern African countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. There are many ways to get around Malawi once you have arrived. Taxis are the easiest way to get around town, but there are local buses offered from the airport terminal to the city. Also available are privately owned buses that run throughout the country and even into neighboring Tanzania. Some of the primary roads are in good shape, although some areas are riddled with potholes that can be difficult and dangerous to drive in. Boating in Malawi is a very efficient and scenic method in getting around, as Lake Malawi runs almost the entire eastern length of the country. For travelers with a higher budget, but less time to see the country, airplanes can also be used to travel between urban centers.
